Welcome to the Wicklow Mountains, a stunning natural landscape that is home to Ireland’s largest national park. The “Garden of Ireland” is truly a breathtaking combination of picturesque biodiverse natural landscapes, feathered in ling heather, framed by the majestic rugged mountains and home to Sika Deer, Pine Martins and Peregrine Falcons.
Steeped in ancient Irish history, the uplands area was formed 445 million years ago by granite intrusion whilst being carved by Ice Age glaciers. The residual glacial lakes flow through streams and waterfalls into the deepest of the Scotts Pine wooded valleys and home to the 6th century St. Kevin's Monastic Settlement at Glendalough, which serves as a gateway to the famous Glendalough Lakes, world-renowned for their outstanding natural beauty. Historically the Wicklow Uplands was a Gaelic stronghold for clans such as the O’Byrnes and served as refuge against the English rule.
Today, the Wicklow Mountains is a thriving, ever-growing community. Situated less than an hour from Dublin, the Wicklow Uplands consists of vibrant villages with a local abundance of excellent restaurants and markets, all supporting local produce and known for their warm open hospitality. Glendalough House & Estate is located between Roundwood and Laragh, homes to The Coach House, The Roundwood Stores and the famous Wicklow Heather restaurant respectively and all just a stone’s throw from Glendalough Village.
